THE frocks aren’t the only thing scrutinised on the red carpet. Beauty is just as key in making or breaking a look on the best dressed lists.

This year’s 86th Academy Awards drew the biggest audience in a decade, with 43 million viewers in the US alone tuning in to watch, according to broadcaster ABC.

With the added pressure of the world’s spotlight, it’s no surprise that A-listers enlist hair and make-up pros to ensure they dazzle the second they step out of the limo.

Unlike the couture dresses, cosmetics worn on the red carpet don’t come with budget-busting price tags.

You may not be able to display an Oscar statuette on your mantelpiece, but you can decorate your bathroom shelves with these red carpet-worthy trophies. Choose your winning look.

NAOMI WATTS’ SLEEK HAIR

An old school Hollywood icon was the inspiration for Naomi Watts’ contemporary, sleek hairstyle.

“I wanted that Grace Kelly elegance that Naomi possesses to shine through,” said Giannandrea, celebrity hair stylist. “We opted for a straight blow-out to feed off the edginess of her dress.”

Naomi’s hair was dried with a large round bristle brush to enhance shine before flat ironing. As a finishing touch, Giannandrea ran his fingers through the styled hair with heated Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil Treatment, to create glossy shine through the length.

JESSICA BIEL’S PASTEL BLUSH

Wearing shimmering Chanel Couture, glowing skin was the only accessory Jessica Biel needed.

“I wanted to do something really fresh, light, and feminine,” said Kayleen McAdams, CK One Color global make-up artist.

“There were so many beautiful pastels in her dress, so I played with those tones.”

After prepping the skin and applying a base, a pink glow was created by applying the cream portion of CK One’s Cream & Powder Blush Duo in Breath 100, right on the apples of Jessica’s cheeks. It was set with the powder portion of the product, to give the look staying power through the night.

LUPITA NYONG’O’S SHIMMER NAILS

Every Oscar winner needs perfect talons to clutch her shiny gold accolade. Best Supporting Actress Lupita Nyong’o sported subtle shimmer to complement her baby blue Prada gown.

“We didn’t want to compete with the dress, so we decided to co-ordinate pearlescent pale pink nails with her accessories,” says Deborah Lippmann, celebrity nail artist and founder of her own nail polish range.

A layer of Gel Lab Base Coat was applied to make the polish last twice as long. Then, to make the lacquer super-opaque, three coats of La Vie En Rose were applied and topped off with a layer of Gel Lab Top Coat.

AMY ADAMS’ ROSY LIPS

Wearing a deep sapphire Gucci gown, Amy Adams worked a naturally flawless look, topped off with a pretty, rosy pout. “She wore a stunning blue gown that was modern and clean, I simply wanted the make-up to be just as sophisticated,” said Stephen Sollitto, celebrity make-up artist.

Amy’s rosy, glossy lips were created using Laura Mercier Rouge Nouveau Weightless Lip Colour in Cozy to give her pout the right tone. Tom Ford Beauty Ultra Shine Lip Gloss in Rose Crush was layered over the top for a touch of glamour to match the occasion.

KATE HUDSON’S SIDE SWEEP

A killer dress needs well-positioned hair to flaunt it to the max. Enter Kate Hudson’s side-swept waves.

“The look we did is a modern take on a classic ’30s/’40s style,” said Chris McMillan, Living Proof celebrity hairstylist. “I saw it as Veronica Lake meets Jerry Hall.”

Kate’s hair was sealed when wet with Living Proof Prime Style Extender, to ensure the style stayed put, before blow-drying with a round brush. A strong side parting was sectioned for a touch of glamour. Her waves were created with a one-inch curling iron, which were brushed through to soften.

OLIVIA WILDE’S CAT EYE

Wearing a monochrome Valentino gown, there was a nod to the ’60s with Olivia Wilde’s make-up.

“We wanted the look to be simple and classic”, said celebrity make-up artist, Melanie Inglessis.

“I created a very precise eye that makes a statement but still works with her fresh skin and light peach lips.”

Olivia’s classic French look was created using Revlon ColorStay Eyeliner in Black to outline her eyes. Revlon ColorStay Liquid Liner in Blackest Black was then applied directly on top, extended with a flicked wing at the outer corners. A tapered cotton bud was used to sharpen the edges and really make Olivia’s sharp cat eye pop.

Best product award: Revlon ColorStay Liquid Eye Pen in Blackest Black, €10.20 (Boots).
