Paul Auster, a prolific, prize-winning man of letters and film-maker known for such inventive narratives and meta-narratives as The New York Trilogy and 4 3 2 1, has died at the age of 77.

His death was confirmed on Wednesday by his literary representatives, the Carol Mann Agency, but no additional details were provided.
