83% rise in UK flat cap sales due to BBC drama Peaky Blinders

Remember that cap your grandad used to wear to mass? Yes, the one you used to be extremely embarrassed about?

Well, turns out it's back in fashion - due to the popularity of BBC drama Peaky Blinders.

The show sees our very own Cillian Murphy rock a flat cap as leading man Thomas Shelby, a member of a Birmingham gang in the 1920s.

UK department store, John Lewis' flat cap sales rose by 27 per cent after the first episode and were up by 83 per cent two weeks later, The Sunday Times reported.

“This year we have seen the flat cap booming in popularity, undoubtedly thanks to the return of BBC Two’s Peaky Blinders,” Holly Clark, who is the Mens Accessories Buyer of the store has said.

“Sales have continued to rocket as the series progresses, peaking at +83% compared to last year the week that the third episode aired.”

Upmarket boutiques across the UK have also seen a rise in sales and are now charging up to £200 for a ‘Tommy hat’.

David Beckham and Justin Timberlake have even been spotted loving the trend.

Sure, if it’s good enough for our grandad, it’s good enough for them.
