Ed Sheeran has seen off competition from Coldplay to claim the year’s best-selling album.

The A Team star sold more than 182,000 thousand copies of X in its first week of release and has shifted more than 634,000 in total, according to figures from the Official Charts Company.

He said: “I’m so happy people have been enjoying my album so much – great to hear that it’s still the biggest seller of the year and has now gone double platinum too. Looking forward to playing it live to my UK fans when the tour starts next week.”

Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour is the second biggest seller having sold 487,000 copies, with Coldplay’s Ghost Stories rounding off the top three.

The top 10 biggest sellers of the year so far is dominated by UK acts with US star Pharrell Williams the only international act included.
