My Chemical Romance have split up after 12 years.

The band have released four studio albums, the first of which was released in 2002. Their last album 'Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys' topped the US Billboard Rock Albums chart.

The punk rock group posted a statement to their website last night in which they thanked their fans for all their support "and for being part of the adventure".

In the short post, My Chemical Romance reminisce about sharing the stage with many performers they admire.

They are currently trending on Twitter, with fans sharing emotional tweets over the split.

Full statement:

"Being in this band for the past 12 years has been a true blessing. We've gotten to go places we never knew we would.

"We've been able to see and experience things we never imagined possible.

"We've shared the stage with people we admire, people we look up to, and best of all, our friends. And now, like all great things, it has come time for it to end. Thanks for all of your support, and for being part of the adventure.
