The social media giant has also revealed their first list of top Facebook Live videos, for both Ireland and around the globe.

The most talked about subject in Ireland and the world is the elections in the US, unsurprisingly, with the General Election here coming second on the Irish list whereas Brazilian Politics was the runner-up on the global list.

Considering it will have such a big affect on our country, it shouldn’t come as a shock that Brexit was third on the Irish list, but on the global rankings it came in seventh, behind Pokemon Go, Black Lives Matter, Rodrigo Duterte and the Rio Olympics.

The Olympics were fourth on the Irish list, ahead of three other great sporting moments for Ireland, Euro 2016 which was fifth, the All-Ireland final in eighth and the Six Nations in tenth.

Of course, 2016 will be remembered for the deaths of what seemed so many famous people, but one that struck a chord here and around the world was David Bowie, who came in sixth in Ireland and ninth on the global list. Muhammed Ali was in tenth on the world list. You can see the both lists at the bottom of the page.

We think most of us can agree that it’s been a rough year for the world, but there have been some lighter moments too, as highlighted by some of the Facebook Live videos on the lists.

Since Facebook Live became available in April, we’ve been flocking to show off our talents online.

The Byrne Brothers captured our hearts in Ireland with their dancing in the centre of Galway, and there was more Irish dancing to delight us from this year’s Fleadh which appears second on the Irish list.

A lot of you had to see Ronan Keating singing a lovely duet with his daughter while you laughed your way through a live episode of Mrs Brown’s Boys.

Gareth Lambe, Head of Facebook Ireland said: "Every day people turn to Facebook to connect with their friends and family on the issues and events that matter most to them. The range of topics in this year’s top ten shows the breadth of subjects discussed on Facebook, from elections to major sporting events and, of course, key moments on the Irish calendar like the All-Ireland finals.

"It was a big year for politics and it is no surprise that the top three most talked-about topics were the Irish and US elections and Brexit. During the summer, we had the Euros and Olympics - at which Ireland was well represented by both our athletes and supporters - with many stand-out moments captured on Facebook.

"The Easter Rising appears on the list demonstrating how people across Ireland took to Facebook to share their thoughts, videos, photos and experiences of the centenary celebrations."
