11-year-old excluded for wearing ’Fifty Shades’ costume to school

An 11-year-old was excluded from yesterday’s World Book Day events at his school after turning up dressed as a character from ’Fifty Shades of Grey’.

Liam Scholes arrived at Sale High School in costume as protagonist Christian Grey - wearing a suit and holding cable ties and an eye mask.

His mother, Nicola Scholes told the Manchester Evening News that she received a call from teachers saying the costume was inappropriate and he would not be allowed to participate in any themed events and a class photograph until the costume was changed.

Nicola, a primary school teacher, says that the idea for the costume was Liam's and she fully supported it:

"We thought it was funny. We were walking home from school and he had the idea of going as Christian Grey."

Nicola pointed out that there was a teacher dressed as a serial killer as well as children dressed as villains.

"One of the teachers went dressed as Dexter and I don't see why sex is seen as more offensive than murder," she said.

"If it was a primary school I could understand but it's a secondary school and the book and the film have been everywhere - it's one of the most famous books in recent years and it's not like the pupils will be unaware of it."

Liam was allowed to take part in the school events after changing his costume to James Bond.
