Cork leads the way in IFTAs with 26 nominations for Christy and Saipan
Daniel Power stars in Christy, which has been shortlisted in 14 IFTA categories.
- the Cork-filmed debut from director Brendan Canty - has emerged as a leading contender at this year’s Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs).
The film has been shortlisted in 14 categories by the Irish Film Academy which has cast its first round of voting across film and TV drama. It’s followed closely by - the story of Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy’s spectacular falling out on the eve of the 2002 World Cup - which secured 12 nominations.
Killarney actress Jessie Buckley is among the Best Actress nominees for her role in awards season favourite The film, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s bestselling novel, has been drawing widespread awards and audiences in recent months. Praise is particularly high for Buckley, strongly expected to get an Oscar nomination for her performance as William Shakespeare’s wife Agnes later this week.

- produced by and starring Cillian Murphy - is shortlisted for Best Film and Best Actor for Murphy. The Netflix drama centres on the efforts of a headmaster trying to protect students at the reform school where he works, as he also manages his personal demons. Murphy is nominated for Best Actor alongside fellow Corkman Éanna Hardwicke for
Shot on location primarily in Knocknaheeny and also in Cork’s city centre, IFTA nominations leader tells the story of a young Cork man’s search for independence as he leaves the foster-care system. Daniel Power, Emma Willis and Jamie Forde have all been nominated in the First-Time Acting Nominees category, with also shortlisted for several awards including Best Film, Actor (Daniel Power) and Director (Brendan Canty).
In the TV Drama categories, season two and season four are among the Irish-made projects finding audiences internationally that have been nominated.
There is a record number of women nominated in directing categories at this year’s awards, among them drama directors Rachel Carey Megan K Fox Oonagh Kearney Mia Mullarkey and Aisling Walsh In film, debut feature director Myrid Carten’s documentary about her family, has been shortlisted along with Lisa Barros D’Sa, who co-directed with Glenn Leyburn.

The male directors nominated include three debut filmmakers: Brendan Canty and Edwin Mullane and Adam O’Keeffe along with established filmmaker Lorcan Finnegan, nominated for his work on the Nicholas Cage-starring thriller,

“This incredible showcase of work reinforces the fact that Irish talent is truly amongst the best in the world, working both in front of and behind the camera across the globe,” said Academy CEO, Áine Moriarty.
This year’s IFTA Awards will take place on February 20th at the Dublin Royal Convention Centre, hosted for the second year running by comedian, actor and broadcaster Kevin McGahern.
