Five For Your Radar: Film festival in Killarney, Cork jazz, Dublin crime-writing

The 26th Kerry International Film Festival is back in Killarney with a packed weekend of screenings, discussions, and events celebrating Irish and international cinema. The festival showcases 17 features, 10 short film programmes, documentaries, music videos, and more. New Irish features include Damian McGann's
and Brian Durnin's , and it closes with Gaby Dellal’s , starring Fiona Shaw, this year’s Maureen O’Hara Award recipient.
Colin Farrell stars as Lord Doyle, a conman and compulsive gambler on the run in Macau, posing as an English aristocrat while evading private detective Blithe (Tilda Swinton). Deep in debt and desperate, he crosses paths with casino fixer Dao Ming (Fala Chen), who offers him a chance at redemption. Directed by Edward Berger and adapted by Rowan Joffe from Lawrence Osborne’s novel, the film also features Deanie Ip and Alex Jennings.

Ireland’s International Crime Writing Festival returns for its eighth edition this weekend, with events, readings, and masterclasses taking place at Dun Laoghaire’s DLR Lexicon Library & Cultural Centre. Highlights include The Insider’s Guide to Getting Published with Sam Blake; Catherine Kirwan, Catherine Ryan Howard, and Amanda Cassidy discussing The Role of Women in Crime Fiction; and
author Chris Whitaker in conversation with Edel Coffey.
The National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland brings one of the greatest Romantic concertos, one of the 20th century’s most gripping declarations, and a “defiant piece that embraces the power of women” to City Hall. Conducted by Anna Rakitina and starring Cork violinist Mairéad Hickey, the evening includes the Irish premiere of Clyne’s Restless Oceans, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5. The event is presented in association with the Cork Orchestral Society.
The 47th Guinness Cork Jazz Festival kicks off the bank holiday weekend on Thursday. Despite the title of the festival, the event platforms a wide range of genres, with acts such as the Sultans of Ping, soul singer Lee Fields, emerging pop star Sienna Spiro, and hip-hop group The Pharcyde taking to stages across the city.
