TV review: Netflix show With Love, Meghan is a few tweaks away from satire
Meghan Markle's new show, With Love, Meghan, is on Netflix now
‘Baking is not my favourite thing, but I will do it for one of my favourite people.’
That’s Meghan Markle in her new Netflix show, .
One of her favourite people is make-up artist and old friend, Daniel. He’s paying a visit to Meghan and she’s taking this opportunity to show us how to be the perfect host.
Apparently that means showing your guest how to cook a pasta dish, bake a cake and make beeswax candles from your own beehive.
Daniel’s job is to be amazed at Meghan’s hosting skills. It’s not as bad as it sounds. It’s much worse.
I don’t know why they didn’t call it ‘Too Much Meghan and Daniel’. At one point they go out into the back garden so Daniel can tell Meghan that her sponge cake is really delicious.
The view is epic in fairness and Daniel decides to take a break from the Meghan Worship to ask her the height of the mountain in the middle distance.
Meghan says she doesn’t know, but she wishes she did. Daniel goes back to adoring the sponge cake.
If they left that scene in, you have to wonder what they left out. One thing they left out completely is Prince Harry.
Her husband doesn’t appear on screen once, although we’re invited to believe he’s the voice off-screen who replies “latte” when Meghan asks what he’s drinking.
Meghan then says “latte love” to herself for reasons we might never understand.
The only upside is Beekeeper Branden. That’s his title on screen and there is nothing we can do about it.
The Simpsons made a joke out of this patronising naming scheme with Groundskeeper Willie, but no one is laughing here.
At least Branden is eye-catching with his scraggly long hair and the suspicion that he learned to speak by watching Wayne’s World on a loop.
He’s here to help Meghan harvest the honey. The whole bee thing is obviously big with the super-celeb set, David Beckham featured it in his documentary as well.
But Beckham also featured his famous spouse and a fascinating glimpse of his life in the spotlight.
It’s a couple of tweaks away from being a spoof. Meghan tells us her kids refer to her friend as uncle Daniel.
If their actual uncle Andrew turned up as the house guest, it would have made for very spicy satire. We should be so lucky.
