Fran Lebowitz, 74, grew up in a small New Jersey town called Morristown. She first went to kindergarten aged five years old. She was really looking forward to it, but events took a turn. She ended the day sitting in the corner of the room with a Band-Aid over her mouth and holding a sign which said: “I am a chatterbox”.

Today, Lebowitz earns her living chatting as a professional raconteur, whom the New York Times have dubbed as a “modern-day Dorothy Parker”. She’s the subject of two Martin Scorsese documentaries, which focus on the wonder of her wit. The latest one – entitled Pretend It’s a City – was released to wide acclaim in 2021 on Netflix.
