Film: The Wild Robot

General release, Friday, October 18

It seems like a while since we’ve had a really special original animated film and The Wild Robot sounds like it might be one to file away next to Wall-E.

The Wild Robot is in cinemas from Friday, October 18.

Produced by DreamWorks Animation, it features the vocal stylings of Stephanie Hsu, Lupita Nyong'o, Bill Nighy, Catherine O'Hara, and Matt Berry, and follows Rozzum 7134, a robot that washes ashore on a deserted island; thus begins a tale of survival and discovery.

Gig: Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin

Coughlan’s, Cork, Saturday, October 19

Aptly, it feels like he’s a word-of-mouth success - once you see him you’ll want to tell everyone you know about how special his voice is. He won two RTÉ Folk Awards last year, making incredible speeches in support of Palestine.

Comedy: Fern Brady

Everyman Theatre, Cork, Saturday October 19.

Scottish deadpan, irreverent comedian Fern Brady will be well known to viewers of Taskmaster and Live At The Apollo and released her last standup special Autistic Bikini Queen on Netflix in April. Her new show is I Gave You Milk To Drink. The concept: What happens when you get everything you want and it’s not enough?

TV: The Franchise

Sky Atlantic/Now TV, Monday, October 21

Armando Iannucci is responsible for The Thick of It and Veep, two of the best political satires ever done - maybe politics is too strange even for him in 2024 that his next move is a comedy taking aim at superhero franchise movies and the chaos behind-the-scenes to create them.

The Franchise: Superhero satire is on Sky Atlantic and Now TV from Monday, October 21.

The eight-episode series kicks off with the opener directed by Sam Mendes (1917/Skyfall).

Festival: Guinness Cork Jazz Festival

Cork Opera House, Wednesday, October 23

The Jazz Festival kicks off one of its best-looking lineups in years with a unique show at Cork Opera House. We Almost Lost Detroit features Brian Jackson and special guests. One of the forefathers of neo-soul and modern hip hop, Jackson made music with the legendary Gil Scott-Heron and puts his music at the service of social and/or political messages.
