After months of refurbishment, Cork city centre’s only cinema is ready to open again. The former Gate Cinema on North Main Street has been rechristened as the Arc, and audiences attending screenings over the next few weeks will get to sit in super-comfy new seats as they watch films on the latest high-tech screens.

The new space will finally be revealed to the people of Cork this week – but it hasn’t forgotten its roots. Perched on the corner of North Main Street, the Gate Cinema first opened in 1998. It closed its doors in August of this year – not long after the busy period that came with the simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer - and work has been ongoing behind-the-scenes ever since.
