Film review: No One Will Save You peels away the sci-fi clichés to reveal something fascinating

The movie is virtually a one-woman show, and Kaitlyn Dever gets roughly three short lines of dialogue throughout

★★★★☆ No One Will Save You (12A) revolves around Brynn (Kaitlyn Dever), a young seamstress who lives alone and is ostracised by the small town of Mill River, where she is considered a ‘freak’. 

A cheerless existence, then, but life is about to get a lot tougher: when Brynn suffers a home invasion by an alien, and somehow manages to deal with the attacker herself, she personally incurs the wrath of an entire alien invasion.

Written and directed by Brian Duffield, No One Will Save You sounds preposterous on paper, and seems equally as ridiculous as its early stages unfold.

But as we discover more about Brynn, and especially the guilt she feels over the death of her childhood friend, Maude (Evangeline Rose), the story gradually starts to peel away the sci-fi clichés to reveal something fascinating lurking beneath the surface. 

Brian Duffield doesn’t make it easy for Kaitlyn Dever — the movie is virtually a one-woman show, and she gets roughly three short lines of dialogue throughout — but Dever deserves full credit for embodying the emotional rollercoaster of a woman living through an experience that she instinctively understands is not real, but who is nevertheless obliged to live its horrific truth.
