Podcast Corner: Angela Scanlon grateful for new Thanks a Million podcast
From Xposé to The One Show and Your Home Made Perfect, Meath woman Angela Scanlon has tried plenty of TV presenting hats — she also has a weekly BBC Radio 2 show.
Adept at no matter what she’s faced with, it’s perhaps little surprise to hear she’s started a podcast, Angela Scanlon’s Thanks a Million — “The show that thinks about thanks, with the good, the great, and the grateful.”
She explains its raison d’etre: “Mostly I’m hoping that I can use this podcast as a way of getting Oprah to love me, but if I can’t, I’ll just be thankful she’s in the world, and try hijack some great stuff from some wiser people than me in the studio.”
Thanks a Million began with two episodes at the start of October, with weekly episodes since. First up was Aisling Bea, a press mainstay lately due to her This Way Up series with Sharon Horgan, and her Netflix show with Paul Rudd, Living With Yourself. She’s at home and reflective with Scanlon, admitting to a particularly difficult period that knocked her confidence.
“You’re almost made feel like such a special princess, you can absolutely see why people become dickheads,” she says of being on set.
An eye-opening chat with Cash Carraway, a sex worker turned author, is funny but most definitely NSFW (not suitable for work).
A discussion on fashion journalism with Pandora Sykes of pop-culture podcast The High Low is interesting, particularly Scanlon explaining how she almost had to escape it: “I had to absolutely deny it — ‘I don’t do fashion anymore’ — in order to be seen in a different way and it’s only now that I feel like I’m allowed to dip my toe [back in] and enjoy it in the way that I always have, because people see you in a different space and they don’t define you as being the fashion girl.”
The celebrity interview podcast genre seems full at the moment — but it’s worth making space for Angela Scanlon.
