Podcast Corner: Heavy-hitters go live for Dublin Podcast Festival
The third annual Dublin Podcast Festival takes place across the month of November in various venues across the capital. There’s a bit of everything, from feminism to sports to economics to Sweet Valley High.
The latter is the subject of Double Love (The Podcast Studios, November 21), a podcast from Karyn Moynihan and Anna Carey which began in July 2018 on the Headstuff Podcast Network, as they discuss Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, one Sweet Valley High book at a time.
Such in-depth series are perfect podcast fodder — fans will delight in the intricities of the discussions.
The cult of James Richardson began with Football Italia on Channel 4 in the 1990s and continued through the Guardian’s Football Weekly.
He’s now the quickfire presenter of the Totally Football Show, having left Football Weekly a couple of years ago.
He’s still got puns to burn which will no doubt be on display at the Liberty Hall Theatre on November 8 where he’ll be joined by Duncan Alexander, Julien Laurens, and Michael Cox.
One curious event at Dublin Podcast Festival is the debut live outing of Niall Breslin’s Where Is My Mind? (Sugar Club, November 18).
The podcast debuted over the summer, with six episodes exploring various aspects of mental health interspersed with meditations guided by Bressie himself. They act as a good introduction, though their sound effects and interruptions are irritating. No doubt the Blizzards frontman will stride through the live proceedings.
The big hitters — The Guilty Feminist, Blindboy, It Galz, David McWilliams, and Jarleth Regan — are all present across the month, while one small Irish podcast that’s gathering steam, having sold out two nights at the Podcast Studios (November 14, 16), is Bandwagons, a brilliantly eclectic, laugh-out-loud explorations of myriad subjects from the Great British Bake Off to the X Factor and tarot cards.
After a couple of listens, you’ll want to be best friends with Bríd and Fionnuala.
