Makeup artist and YouTuber Lauren Malone started making tutorials as a hobby and today has had over 200,000 views on her videos.
The 26-year-old who lives in Gorey, Co Wexford also owns Lauren Malone Academy.
“I began Lauren Malone Academy on a very small scale in 2017, renting boardrooms in hotels and holding classes there, and then when I began to outgrow the room, this is where my formal training centre came about,” she says.
“I have been working as a makeup artist since I was 17 years old - so I have nearly 10 years experience at this stage. I train students who wish to work as makeup artists, we offer everything from special effects to bridal makeup.”
Lauren is accepting enrolments for her ITEC 16-week makeup course. Her husband, Jordan Fletcher, encouraged Lauren to set up her YouTube channel, where she discusses makeup, beauty and fashion.
“I started YouTube as a hobby, I watch YouTube instead of TV - I love it! I am subscribed to a variety of channels and watch everything from crime documentaries to DIY IKEA tutorials.
"With a little nudge from my husband, I got my own channel up and running. He bought me a camera, a tripod, ring light and researched everything from thumbnails to video editing - even down to hashtags!
“I had toyed with the idea of doing makeup tutorials for the longest time and I think he got sick of me talking about it and doing nothing proactive. He is my biggest supporter.”
Lauren says she posts many reviews and believes people trust her judgement as she has been open about her own skincare concerns.
“I tend to post reviews of foundations. I suffer with adult acne and find that people really seem to relate to me not having perfect skin, and they trust me when I say a product is good.”
While she has encountered negativity on the platform, she says the interactions helped to grow her presence there.
“With all social media, once you put yourself out there online, you open yourself up to a whole world of strangers who can and will leave unkind or unhelpful comments.
“YouTube is a funny platform, the more people that interact with your videos (commenting, liking, subscribing), the more the site will promote your videos - so even a ‘thumbs down’ is actually a positive thing. It really is the epitome of ‘all press is good press’”
The success she found on YouTube helped her open her makeup academy.
“I could not have opened my academy without the positive growth that I have had from my YouTube channel.”
