While Christmas is, of course, a time for celebration, it's also important to remember many are struggling.

A Reddit post today acts as a poignant reminder of that fact.

Redditor burritobattlefield found a ripped-up Christmas card on a Melbourne train and pieced it back together. He then shared a photo of the heartbreaking message written inside on the site.

It reads in full:

"Bad things happen to good people sometimes, but how you react to these things is what defines you. You always have a choice, there are better things ahead for you but it's in your hands, it's your responsibility.

"Have a happy Christmas, ps. Stop drinking. get help from someone."

While we don’t know the full story behind the message or who wrote it, it's clearly touched a nerve online, with many commenting on how sad it was and some sharing their own experiences with alcoholism.

"Damn. You just know that card made him want another drink right then and there."

"Honestly one of the most depressing things I've read all year on reddit."

"I think the saddest part is that you know since the receiver ripped it up, he/she is not likely to get help or deal with his/her problems. You can see the denial"

"This hits so damn close to home… The holidays have been a tough time this year. Barely even able to get excited. I want to stop drinking. I have for years, but before anyone else can tell me, I already know I'm weak.

"I screen capped this picture, it'll be a good reminder of how far down other people can get. I hope next year is a better year. I don't want to die."
