US stenographer fired after typing nothing but 'I hate my job'

A court stenographer in the US is accused of ignoring trial details and instead repeatedly typing "I hate my job", according to reports.

At least 10 convictions could be overturned after Daniel Kochanski failed to deliver transcripts New York judges were expecting, according to the New York Post.

Among the botched records is from the 2010 trial of a man convicted of trying to hire a hit man to murder a witness.

A source familiar with the case told the Post that Kochanski's transcripts of that trial were a total mess.

“It should have been questions and answers — instead it was gibberish,” the source said.

Mr Kochanski, 43, was fired in March 2012 and arrested after his notes came to light. Reports said he had difficulties with alcohol at the time he is alleged to have botched the trial transcripts.

Kochanski denied he had typed gibberish, telling the Post: “I always did my job 100%. I was let go because of substance abuse".

However appeals have been filed in at least 10 cases.

“I never had a situation where a single court reporter was responsible for so much damage,” said Claudia Trupp of the Center for Appellate Litigation, whose office is handling the appeals.
