Miley smoked a joint on stage to make crowd 'go wild'

Miley Cyrus smoked a rolled cigarette at the MTV Europe Music Awards because she knew everyone would "go wild".

The attention-seeking star caused controversy when she sparked up what appeared to be a cannabis joint as she took to the stage at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam - where it is legal to take the drug - to collect her Best Video prize for 'Wrecking Ball' on Sunday, and admits she hadn't planned the stunt and only did it to see the reaction.

Miley said: "I just did it mostly because I knew the fans in Amsterdam would love it. And I knew that the whole place would go super wild.

"It's just not something I think about. I was just was walking out of my room and then I was like, 'Oh I have this in my bag. That will be really funny.'

"I didn't say anything to anybody. And I don't tell anyone I'm going to do it. Some people just over think so much."

The blonde singer's stunt comes after she stunned viewers when she twerked on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in Brooklyn, New York, in August and gyrated against Robin Thicke while wearing a nude-coloured bikini much to the shock of the live audience and TV viewers across the world.

Her routine hit the headlines and has since been slammed by several stars, but Miley insists she much prefers performing in Europe rather than the US because people pay more attention to her music as well as her antics.

Speaking on British radio station Capital FM, the controversial pop star - who performed 'Wrecking Ball' at the EMAs - added: "I think after you do something like that [lighting up a cigarette] and then everyone kind of doesn't want to talk as much about your performances, but this is one of my favourite parts about coming to Europe.

"Even though that happened, it's not the main focus of the night. Everyone was liking my performance and how I sounded ... which is so different than when you do something in the States.

"When I did the VMAs, everything just became about teddy bears, or about what I was wearing ... people over here really listen and take in all of it, it's not just about that."

Meanwhile, Gary Barlow says Miley Cyrus can twerk as much as she wants on 'The X Factor' when she performs on the ITV show on Sunday.

He said she should include her controversial rump-shaking move, despite it being a family show.

He told the Daily star newspaper: "It's music - she's a young girl. If that's the way she wants to express herself, fair enough. It's a tricky one because I remember Madonna when she brought her 'Sex' book out and everyone was going crazy. That seemed more shocking.

"But, you know, there's an off button. I always say, if you don't want to watch it, turn it off."

While he is not against Miley twerking on TV, Gary - who has children Daniel, 13, Emily, 11, and four-year-old Daisy with wife, Dawn - has previously said his young ones are banned from watching sexy pop videos by artists such as Rihanna.

He said: "These singers are young, sexy girls - of course they are going to express themselves like that. But I don't let my kids watch it.

"I probably wouldn't let them watch anything like that, it's too sexual for them."

Gary, 42, will also perform his new solo single 'Let Me Go' on the show.
