The film world is gearing up for tomorrow’s Baftas with Julie Christie and Daniel Day-Lewis tipped to continue their winning streak.

The pair have already garnered awards for their performances – Christie as an Alzheimer’s sufferer in 'Away From Her' and Day-Lewis as an oil baron in 'There Will Be Blood'.

They face competition from 'Atonement' stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy.

Atonement leads the pack with 14 nominations. They include best film, best British film, best director for Joe Wright and best supporting actress for 13-year-old Saoirse Ronan.

'There Will Be Blood' and Coen brothers thriller 'No Country For Old Men' each have nine nominations, while Edith Piaf biopic 'La Vie En Rose' has seven.

The best film contenders are 'American Gangster', 'Atonement', 'The Lives of Others', 'No Country for Old Men' and 'There Will Be Blood'.

Cate Blanchett is up for two awards – best supporting actress for 'I’m Not There' and leading actress for 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age'.

The Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony takes place at the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden.

Jonathan Ross will host them for the second year running.

In previous years, the Baftas have been the poor relation of the Oscars and Golden Globes.

But with the Globes cancelled and the Oscars still in jeopardy as a result of the US writers’ strike, they have assumed greater significance.
