Favela Rising engaging, but sometimes irksome
Rio de Janeiro is the focus of Favela Rising (ICA Projects, €24.99) a documentary about the city’s violent favela (shantytown) and the revolutionary vision of one man who attempts to win his community back from the drug gangs.
Anderson Sa, a former drug trafficker uses hip-hop music and Afro-Brazilian dance as weapons in his battle in this engaging, but sometimes irksome film by Matt Mochary and Jeff Zimbalist.
