Blunt: 'I think I'm emotionally stunted'

James Blunt’s tear-jerking songs may be the soundtrack for loved-up couples everywhere, but the former British army captain says he is probably “emotionally stunted“.

The 29-year-old’s chart-topping ditty You’re Beautiful has become one of the most popular wedding anthems in the UK – and is also played at funerals.

Yet he says despite the “sensitive singer/songwriter” tag he has earned he finds it hard to express himself in real life relationships.

“I think sensitive is the wrong description of me,” Blunt told USA Today.

“I’m British, actually, so quite bad at expressing myself in conversation, as any ex-girlfriend will tell you.

“I’m probably emotionally stunted.”

You’re Beautiful is said to have been written after the singer saw his ex-girlfriend on a train with a new man.

Blunt, whose album Back to Bedlam sold 2.4 million copies in Britain and spent nine weeks at number one, is starting to see success in America as well.

The record, released in the US in October, has got to number eight in the charts after gradually building sales.

But he told the newspaper he was not obsessed with trying to “break America“.

“Commercialism is an ugly thing to focus on,” Blunt said.

“The US is a very different place, and often we in Britain very naively say, ’We’re going to invade and break America.’

“I’m adamant that I haven’t come here to break anyone.”
