Kickboxing film should appeal to all
Kickboxing may not be your passion, but in Beautiful Boxer (Tartan, €24.99) it’s hard to avoid the action scenes because they pepper this excellent true life story.
Parinya (beautifully played by Asanee Suwan) always wanted to be a champion, but he also wanted to be something else — a woman.
Director Ekachai Uekrongtham delivers action, drama and some humour in this remarkable story, and in doing so reminds us desire can sometimes conquer all.
There’s a fine English interview with Uekrongtham, plus subtitled interviews with him, Sawan and Nong Toom (formerly Parinya), director’s commentary and a ‘making of’ featurette.
: 4/5.
