Record US opening for Lord of the Rings

Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson had two reasons to celebrate today: The first chapter of his trilogy scored four Golden Globe nominations and took a record £12.5m on its first day of release in the US.

It was the highest US single-day take for a film in December and it took in an additional £8m in 13 other countries where it opened the same day.
