Although an animal does not need specific training to become an emotional support animal, in order to be prescribed an emotional support animal the person seeking one must have a verifiable disability.

The Air Carrier Access Act states that emotional assistance animas are not required to be caged on a flight and people are not charged anything extra for flying with them.
