The artist John Lavery began a lifelong love affair with Tangier in January 1891. He painted the beaches to the east and west of the medina on many occasions.

A 1919 Tangier view by Lavery comes up at Sotheby’s sale of Modern and Contemporary Irish Art in London on September 13, estimated at £100,000-150,000 (€116,396- €174,601. The shadows on the sands indicate that this is a morning painting.
