Quake Champions might be free to play
It couldn't come at a better time for developers id Software who have just released a remake of Doom that has gone down extremely well with players and critics. They're on the crest of a wave, and will want to keep the hits coming after years in the doldrums.
The latest news about Champions comes via a German site called Gamestar and an interview with studio director Tim Willits.
There's a lot of info in the write up but one of the most interesting has to do with how the game could be released. While we know its PC only at the moment, there's a possibility that id could release the game for free to command the biggest possible audience.
The free to play model has had its ups and downs over the years, with developers including microtransactions in order to secure a revenue stream. id hasn't yet decided on how the game will release, so it could still potentially come at an initial cost.
Champions wants to draw in the Esports cohort as well, so a lower price would be an advantage, and it also seems each Champion will have an active and a passive ability. Sounds like a lot of fun.
Quake Champions doesn't have a confirmed release date yet.
