Why The New Elder Scrolls Online Cinematic Is Awesomely Pointless

Blur Studios are the undisputed kings of CG cinematics. But are their talents being wasted on pointless, arguably deceptive, video game short films?

Why The New Elder Scrolls Online Cinematic Is Awesomely Pointless

Obviously they’ve outsourced to Blur Studios for this miniature epic. This is par for the course for many a Triple A publisher. Not only is Blur’s output superb in terms of design, modelling and action direction, but the team is virtually unchallenged in the CG animated short department. But that’s exactly what this is, right?

Eight remarkable minutes of swords and sorcery that kinda has nothing to do with anything…

Sure, it has Elder Scrolls insignia branded all over it and even manages to cameo Cyrodill’s famed White Gold Tower.

But Come On - The Elder Scrolls Online isn’t going to be anything like this!

They won’t.

They just won’t.

We all know they won’t.Do you really expect to magically shred kilometre long celestial shackles in a Massively Multiplayer Online Experience? Really? Do you actually think you’ll be dynamically dodging between the legs of lumbering giants and smashing the monkeys from its back? Do you truthfully envisage yourself skilfully parrying, deflecting and riposting a have dozen incoming sword swings, cutting a bloody (and spectacularly choreographed) swath through your foes?Of course not. You’ll be doing this.

When you think of Star Wars: The Old Republic does your mind wander to the clunky Bioware subscription or the trilogy of awesome Blur vignettes?

Recall how excited you were to witness that Resident Evil: Racoon City spectacle?

Yep. Resident Evil: Racoon City.

Remember that awe-inspiring DC Animated Universe Short Film?

Remember what a snooze fest the final product was?

Just show them your damn gameplay.

Show them what you got.

Show them what you’ve got in mind.

Show them why your product is different and worth their time and mouse clicks. They don’t need gorgeous visuals and blisteringly exciting fight scenes (but full disclosure, it’s always a treat watching Blur’s work.) Just show them your wares and chances are, they’ll get on board.

Hell, show ME what you got - If your gameplay is solid and your features are cool, MMO or not, I’d happily give it a go.But sadly, when I see a Blur Cinematic in place of actual real video game footage, my default setting is cynical. And indeed, perhaps I am too cynical.

But in my defence, how many of THESE just painted over the cracks with Blur Cinematics?!?!In Short: Blur Studios are the undisputed kings of CG cinematics. But are their talents being wasted on pointless, arguably deceptive, video game short films?
