Light Colour Action
For centuries, deep colour has acted as a cunning disguise for a leery view, while celebrating the architecture of a great window, and also keeping a bored congregation focused on the soaring glory of God, while in hard penitential pews. The Edwardians and Victorians may have been polite, even socially repressed, but their windows and fanlights flashed with dazzling, visceral life.
Stained glass can reduce glare in the top panels of large glazed areas, or mask an ugly view at ground level with decoration in the lower parts, while admitting bright sky light above. Coloured or textured glass introduces privacy and separation while admitting a measured amount of illumination. Used in pictorial or abstract form, stained glass brings an artist’s imaginings completely alive.
