It began as a six-week holiday in Thailand en route to Australia for a year. On arrival, I discovered that Thailand only grants four-week tourist visas. I couldn’t extend my tourist visa, or change my flights to Australia. My only option was to do a border run (leave the country and then re-enter with a new visa), and the easiest place to do it was Cambodia.

Anxious at the thought of crossing into South America’s biggest cocaine producing nation, I was kindly reassured by a stoned backpacker in a Bangkok bar that I was getting it confusing with Columbia. Relieved and disappointed in equal measures, I set forth.
