Colm O'Regan: Of course the word gymnastics comes from the Greek words ‘to exercise naked’

I’m sure people were somersaulting all through history but the Greeks seem to be the first to put a word on it
Colm O'Regan: Of course the word gymnastics comes from the Greek words ‘to exercise naked’

Colm O'Regan: "Apparently, 1 in 5 girls drop out of sport between primary and secondary school, four times the rate of boys. So if they can hang in there, upside down or otherwise, I’ll have a lot to thank gymnastics for." Picture: Chani Anderson.

In the words of the old Chinese proverb: In the one-roomed downstairs, everyone is watching the same TV. And so it is, while standing in the kitchen, I have been listening and occasionally glancing at the children’s latest obsession, Gymnastics Academy: A Second Chance. as US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth might say in a text, “I don’t know who needs to know this but I’ll tell you anyway”: Gymnastics Academy is the TV series spin-off from A Second Chance.

It seems a perfectly adequate formulaic show – you won’t read about it at the Emmys. All you need to know is that it’s about gymnastics. And that’s all my girls care about.
