Buttevant gets set to party as roadworks finally end

It may have taken a couple of years to repair and complete what was once dubbed the worst road surface in any Irish town.
Buttevant gets set to party as roadworks finally end

But tortured inter-city motorists, who endured huge delays between Cork and Limerick, will sound their horns in support as Buttevant plans to party.

To celebrate the end of the road and footpaths upgrades in the north Cork town, residents are planning an ‘Open for Business’ street party on Saturday, December 10.

Buttevant Community Council is organising the event with a street ceremony featuring lots of family fun, which will be opened by the Mayor of County Cork Cllr Seamus McGrath.

A spokesman for the community council said there will be a number of stalls and exhibits, which will display various goods, arts and crafts. “There will also be entertainment, for all age groups and a spectacular Christmas parade, headlined by Santa Claus which will culminate with the switching-on of the Christmas lights,” the community council spokesman said.

It was hoped, he said, all the local shops, businesses and groups will support the occasion which will run from 3pm to 6pm. “There will also be an elaborate fireworks display to celebrate the occasion. The emphasis is on a fun occasion for everybody,” the community council spokesman added.

He said the street revamp had been an “endurance test” for locals and commuters who had to put up with the roadworks on what is part of the main N20 national route. Plans for a replacement €1bn M20 motorway remain on hold.

“The scheme was an endurance test, for all concerned, and now we have a street, and footpath development, that any town would be proud of,” said the community council, “now is the time for all residents of the Buttevant area, to show ‘pride’ in our place.”
