Organic farming scheme now open for applications

The Organic Farming Scheme is officially open for applicants. Tillage sector applicants will receive priority access.

The Organic Farming Scheme has officially opened.

The scheme will be open to applications from November 19 and will remain open until December 12. Applicants from the tillage sector will receive priority access.

The scheme is a co-funded scheme by the Department of Agriculture and the EU.

A guide on how to apply for the scheme is available on the department website to assist potential applicants.

Agriculture minister Martin Heydon said: “Over the last five years [2021-2025], the number of farmers in the Organic Farming Scheme has increased by 221%, to 5,500.

"I allocated €58.6m in Budget 2026 to provide for a continuation of financial support to these farmers and encourage the production of organic foods. This will also facilitate the targeted reopening of the scheme to farmers in the tillage sector.”

The minister spoke about feedback from the Organic Strategy Forum earlier this year, highlighting the strong demand for organic oats, led by the UK market, with growing interest from other markets such as East Asia.

Ireland’s Climate Action Plan has a target of 10% of land area to be farmed organically by 2030. The Government’s aim is to reach this target by supporting farmers to convert to organic farming through the Organic Farming Scheme, enhanced advisory support and increased promotion, as well as developing market demand.
