The Department of Agriculture has announced six farm hazardous waste collection days over the next few weeks in Clare, Meath, Cork, Tipperary, Mayo, and Kerry

Collection will take in a variety of hazardous waste from farmers on collection days, which includes medical waste such as dips, doses, wormers, dry tubes, needles and syringes.

The Department of Agriculture has announced six farm hazardous waste collection days over the coming weeks.

Waste collection will be taking place in Clare, Meath, Cork, Tipperary, Mayo, and Kerry. Collection sites will be open from 9am to 4pm. Hazardous waste will not be accepted outside of opening times.

Collection points are:

  • Clare: November 12, Ennis Mart, V95 APF2. 
  • Meath: November 20, Fairyhouse Racecourse, A85 XK30. 
  • Cork: November 25, Charleville Show Grounds, P56 XO94. 
  • Tipperary: November 28, Truck Show Grounds, Newtown, E41 HP98. 
  • Mayo: December 3, Aurivo, Balla Mart, F23 EC99. 
  • Kerry: December 9, Listowel Mart, V31 PK75.

Hazardous waste types include pesticides and biocides (including wood preservatives, rodenticides) for €4.50/kg, Veterinary medicine will cost €3.50/kg, which includes doses, dips, wormers, dry tubes, needles and syringes, and glass bottles of injectable medicines.

Hazardous waste paint is €1.20/kg, waste oil will be €0.20/kg, oil filters or oil drums will cost €1.20/kg, corrosives, brake fluid, coolant, grease, adhesives, and aerosols will cost €6/kg, and persistent organic pollutants will also cost €6/kg but are subject to clarification on identification of persistent organic pollutants.

Each waste type must be segregated and clearly identifiable, with all needles and syringes in a separate sealed container. Mixed or unidentifiable waste will not be accepted at the collection points, and waste engine and hydraulic oils should not be mixed with any other substances. 

Any and all waste is under the responsibility of the farmer until Enva confirms and accepts the waste. Payments for the waste can be made by cash, cheque or card and must be paid for on the day. Farmers will receive a receipt of payment and a certificate of transfer of control issued on the day. Farmers must have a herd number or equivalent to give on the day.

Regarding the collection days, agriculture minister Martin Heydon said: “In parallel with the roll-out of further collection days, my department continues to work closely with the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment and other members of the National Hazardous Waste Management Plan Working Group on appropriate regulatory developments regarding hazardous waste management via extended producer responsibly schemes.”
