The iron cross on the 98-acre historical farm at Gortroe, Dunmanway, Co Cork.

New to the market with Dunmanway auctioneer Daniel Lehane is a 98ac holding at Gortroe, approximately 8km from Dunmanway.

The property offers a good deal of acreage that doesn’t come along every day, and it also boasts the feature of a derelict farmhouse in the centre of the holding.

One of its more famous features, however, is its large iron cross on the southern end that marks the spot that served as a temporary burial place for three Irish volunteers who were buried there in November 1920

They had taken part in the famous Kilmichael Ambush nearby, and were later reinterred at Castletown Church.

“This historical holding comprises 45 acres of very good land,” said Mr Lehane.

“There are 17 acres of semi-mature forestry, and the balance of the lands is mainly rough grazing. It’s a nice south-facing farm and all in one block.”

With Dunmanway within easy reach, Cork City is just a 45-minute drive away from this farm. It’s an area dominated by the dairying sector, meaning that there should be no shortage of suitors for such a great quantity of land coming onto the market at once.

The guide price is a reasonable €650,000 (€6,600/acre), which should ensure a good deal of interest. Furthermore, the old farmhouse should qualify for both the Vacant Home and Derelict Home grants.
