Senator Eileen Lynch said the programme was founded by Muintir na Tíre in 1985 following a spike in rural crime, break-ins, and illegal activity.

The community alert scheme set up 40 years ago by Muintir na Tíre after a surge in rural crime is more important than ever, the Oireachtas has been told.

Operated with the support of An Garda Síochána, it now has more than 1,000 groups representing over 200,000 people countrywide.
