EU fertiliser manufacturers must use 42.5% renewable energy, and their EU Emissions Trading System costs are to increase significantly, So it will remain to be seen if they can expand enough to replace the 25% of fertiliser imports from the east.

European farmers warn they will soon be "up against the wall", as Brussels moves to cut off the 25% of the EU’s fertiliser imports that come from Russia and Belarus.

"European farmers currently have no guarantees that the fertiliser shortfall will be offset by increased domestic production at a competitive price", warned the Copa and Cogeca organisations which represents farmers in Brussels.
