Over 1,000 buildings have been repaired under the scheme since it was introduced in 2008.

Europe has given the thumbs up to Ireland for helping farmers recognise the cultural value of traditional buildings.

The country was chosen for a European Heritage Award in recognition of a scheme co-funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine under the Rural Development Programme.
