EU warns of welfare 'gaps' in live exports

EU warns of welfare 'gaps' in live exports

EU auditors have said DAFM does not enforce the feeding of the animals on ferries, and this is not in line with the EU Commission’s interpretation of legal requirements.

The Department of Agriculture has rejected a 2022 report by EU Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety auditors, which alleged shortcomings in the welfare of unweaned calves during long journeys.

In the report, EU auditors praised Ireland's great investment in a comprehensive official control system to minimise risks on the journey from Ireland to Cherbourg, France. They also noted regular communication and cooperation with French authorities to ensure capacity at the control posts near the French port to unload, feed and rest the animals.
