'Disappointing' vote on Dutch calf imports could have 'large impact'

A ban on calves would have a 'large impact' for Ireland’s farms, leading to an extra 100,000 calves in the system 'that have to be facilitated here or have to be exported somewhere else'.

A ban on the import of calves to the Netherlands would be “disappointing” for Ireland's agriculture sector which produces “top quality” animals, Irish Farmers’ Association dairy chairman Stephen Arthur has said.

Mr Arthur spoke of the concern in Ireland now following the majority of the House of Representatives in the Netherlands recently voting to ban the import of calves to the country, through a motion brought by Leonie Vestering of the Party of the Animals.
