IFA calls for new tax designation for quads

The IFA is calling for a change of tax designation for farm quads in the budget. It is effectively impossible to register and tax farm quads for limited use on public roads, the association has told the Government in its pre-budget submission.
IFA calls for new tax designation for quads

The current interpretation of EU Directives on road safety standards has resulted in the crux. According to the IFA, farmers are being informed that their quad is classified as a general haulage tractor, at an annual tax of €333, or as a private vehicle, with the tax based on the cc of the engine. The IFA says this is a disproportionate level of tax for a small utility vehicle, whose main purpose on any farm is as an off-road vehicle.

“In addition, many quads cannot be registered and taxed for use on public roads, as they are not deemed to meet road safety standards, which requires vehicle ‘type approval’ and manufacturer’s certificate of conformity. To remove the difficulties surrounding the taxation of farm quads, IFA proposes that a system similar to that which operates in the UK is introduced.
