Agri-food sector ‘integral in recovery’

The agri-food sector is set to play an integral part in the country’s economic recovery and the continued viability of rural and coastal areas.

Agriculture Minister Simon Coveney made the prediction when he announced the publication of his department’s annual review and outlook for agriculture, food and the marine.

He said 2014 showed the important role the agri-food sector has played in aiding economic recovery. Figures for last year show the sector accounted for around 8.4% of employment and made a particularly significant contribution in rural areas. CSO estimates for aggregate farm income increased by 5.6% to €2.4bn in 2014.
