Probing sources of sediments

Teagasc researchers are using forensic sciences to determine where sediment in watercourses comes from.
Probing sources of sediments

Scientists collect soil samples from potential sediment sources (such as the banks of watercourses, tillage fields, and forestry).

The distinctive forensic signature from each source area can be identified, and compared with sediment collected in a stream. This is being carried out in three areas where the Teagasc Agricultural Catchments Programme operates. Dr Daire Ó hUallachain (Teagasc Johnstown Castle) said: “It helps identify source areas and facilitates targeting of mitigation measures, in turn helping to achieve water quality objectives under the EU Water Framework Directive”.
