US pig farmer says hygiene vital to eliminate disease

“On December 17, 2013 the PEDv hit hard and fast. I took samples to a diagnostic lab in Brookings, South Dakota, for verification. The test was confirmed.

On December 18, we loaded every piglet out, down to eight days of age. At that point, we had about 1,400 piglets left on the farm, and by Christmas Eve, they were all dead. All piglets born until December 28 died as well. The total loss of stock was about 4,400 head. For my farm, that is a loss of income of about $440,000 just from the sale of the piglets.”
