The ICMSA has described the 17.4% fall in beef prices in one year as “highly suspicious” when compared with the wider European trend of rising prices.

ICMSA president John Comer, in a submission to the agriculture joint committee, said Ireland’s downward price trends are not evident in the UK, a market to which 50% of Irish beef is exported.

Mr Comer also criticised the Government’s “hands off” stance on the debate.
