Alternatives are failing to raise farm incomes

For decades, farmers have been encouraged into alternative enterprises to supplement their main farming enterprise income.

These alternatives have included farmhouse cheese, organic production, crops for bio-fuels, tourism, horses, deer, goats and rabbits.

However, very few of these alternatives were of much use for improving family farm income, and there were some costly failures.
