A 15-20c/kg price improvement since before Christmas for beef cattle, and advanced plans for a 2,900 shipment of cattle to Libya, have started the year favourably for cattle farmers.

The first substantial increase in the supply of cattle to Irish beef factories in recent years is expected this year.

However, the reverse has been the situation in the first weeks of 2013, with strong demand for beef and reduced supply — apparently due to the offloading by farmers of increased numbers of finished cattle in December, when the intake at beef factories reached an annual peak.
