For much of the last century, pests and predators such as crows, magpies, foxes,pigeons, moles (in Britain) were routinely shot, hunted and poisoned by farmers and rough shooters.

Revolving ‘owl’ keeps the pigeons at bay

The system was reasonably effective in keeping farm crops from being damaged, the farmer’s poultry from being killed, and some diseases at bay.

The farmer would walk his land, shotgun under his arm, and there would always be a few cartridges in his pocket.
