Volatile times ahead for Irish dairy sector

As forecast the fortunes of dairy farmers have been very volatile in recent years due to weather, milk price and over quota problems.

Volatile times ahead for Irish dairy sector

During most of 2009, dairy farming was on a low due to the lowest milk prices and the worst weather in decades. Thankfully, the weather and the increase in milk price in 2011 went a long way towards putting some confidence back into dairying. Unfortunately, the weather has reached a new low this year and combined with the high price of concentrates it is one of the worst years in memory, especially for farmers on heavy land.

Even though high concentrate prices are costing Irish dairy farmers serious money, it will significantly reduce milk supplies in most countries and this is already showing up in world dairy markets.
